Those of you that have seen our Facebook page, will have seen the images of the roof top crazy golf at the Walmart offices in Brazil.
What lucky employees they are! Although a simple design, it does look very playable.
The Brazil headquarters for retail conglomerate Walmart’s online division has been by Estudio Guto Requena. A minigolf course was tailored especially for the terrace on the sixth level. There’s also a space for yoga and a seating area in front of a stage for hosting small events, concerts and film screenings.
We have had our version of roof top crazy golf on the grassed roof of a well known bank in the centre of London back in 2009. Here is an image of our portable crazy golf course in action:
You may also remember our feature where you could play roof top crazy golf at Selfridges back in Summer 2012. Bompas and Parr delivered an excellent cake based roof top crazy golf course with jelly obstacles and London landmarks in the shape of cakes – mmm.
Roof top crazy golf isn’t new. In 1916, James Barber designed a miniature golf course in North Carolina called “Thistle Dhu.” The course was compact with fountains, gardens, and geometrical walkway patterns. In 1926, a few other designers created mini golf courses on the roof of a New York City skyscraper. Other buildings soon followed suit. There were around 150 rooftop courses in existence by the end of the decade in New York City alone.
One of the first UK miniature golf courses was on the rooftop of Selfridges London, back in the 1930’s. The old roof gardens were popular with ladies after shopping and even boasted the loop the loop obstacle on its course. Some of the images can be seen in this Daily Mail article.
